About the Facility – Houston VAMC
The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is a hospital affiliated with and operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. It is one of the department's largest hospitals, serving Harris County, Texas and 27 surrounding counties. It is named for Michael E. DeBakey, a renowned surgeon and president of Baylor College of Medicine. The hospital in on a 118-acre campus on Old Spanish Trail and Almeda, just on the edge of the Texas Medical Center. It is accredited by JCAHO, and has 343 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care unit for long-term care.

Registered Nurse SPI/Rehab - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of neurological and spinal cord injury patients.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans based on clinical findings.
  • Manage and respond to neuro-related complications such as autonomic dysreflexia and spasticity.
  • Educate Veterans and caregivers on condition management and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate holistic, Veteran-centered care.
  • Document all nursing care and assessments accurately in VA electronic health records (CPRS).
  • Participate in patient safety initiatives and quality improvement programs within the VA system.

Registered Nurse SPI/Rehab - QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • License: Must possess a current, valid, unrestricted nursing license in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.
  • Experience: Must have a minimum of 12 months' experience in Spinal Cord Injury/Rehabilitation (not Long-Term Care/Nursing Home). Inpatient Rehabilitation experience is preferred.
  • Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA) is mandatory for all specialties. CRRN (Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse) certification is preferred.
