Department of Veterans Affairs offers healthcare services to eligible military veterans at VA medical centers and outpatient clinics across the country. Pharmacist – Duties and Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

  • Pharmacists' care shall encompass the full range of pharmacy services in the inpatient and outpatient environment equivalent to those provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility.
  • Shall dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide patients with information regarding medications and their use. The pharmacist shall advise physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications. The pharmacist must be able to evaluate and provide medication orders for pharmacologic duplications, incompatibilities, side effects, drug-food and drug-drug interactions, and allergies.
  • The pharmacist must be able to appropriately address potential therapeutic problems such as inappropriate dosage, incorrect strength, or improper dosing intervals. The pharmacist shall effectively communicate questionable therapies to providers and recommend reasonable alternatives in accordance with the formulary guidelines established.
  • The pharmacist shall counsel patients and respond to questions regarding prescription drugs, including possible adverse reactions or interactions. The pharmacist shall also provide advice on durable medical equipment and home health care supplies.
  • The pharmacist must demonstrate positive interpersonal skills when interacting with providers, patients, other Medical Center employees, and fellow pharmacy staff members in order to foster an atmosphere of care, helpfulness, and cooperation.
  • Shall ensure that all medication orders are entered and verified in the electronic patient medical record (VistA).
  • Shall provide strict security for all drugs and controlled substances by maintaining accurate records and perpetual inventory control.

Pharmacist – Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate from an ACPE-accredited college and have at least a baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy, and/or a Pharm.D. degree.
  • Any clean, unrestricted pharmacy license from any state is honored.
  • Must have a BLS certificate (preferably through the American Heart Association).
