But for visitors, the opposite is true. Anyone can visit Palo Alto – located conveniently close to both San Francisco and San Jose – and feel welcomed by the sunny climate, rich culture, and fascinating innovation – no application necessary. While here, be sure to explore University Avenue and downtown, stretching between the Stanford Campus and U.S. 101. University Avenue cuts right through downtown, so you're able to enjoy Palo Alto's nearly perfect climate easily with a stroll down the street, popping into shops like the historic Mills Florist or Books Inc. or stopping for a cone at Scoop Microcreamery. Every Saturday morning, local vendors flock here, selling everything from raw milk to freshly made pasta at the Palo Alto Farmers Market. A few other things you won't want to miss while here in Palo Alto is what is commonly known as "The Dish,” a 150-foot-wide radio telescope nested in Stanford's foothills. A 3.5-mile hike leads you to the UFO-like structure, still in use today. And for the "arts” part of "arts and sciences,” opt for a classic movie at the Stanford Theatre. The Theater, founded in 1925, screens only film (no digital) and is home to the Might Wurlitzer Organ, played during intermission. For posh open-air shopping, head to the Stanford Shopping Center for a mix of luxury designers (Burberry, Coach, Kate Spade) and well-known retailers, surrounded by gardens, fountains, and sculptures.

About the Facility – Palo Alto VAMC
VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital associated with the Stanford University School of Medicine. It provides patient care services as well as education and research. Health care is provided in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. 1,300 University residents, interns, and students are trained annually.

VAPAHCS operates nearly 900 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary serving more than 85,000 enrolled veterans.

Shift Need:
Shift 1: Monday-Friday 8 am - 5 pm, one hour lunch
Shift 2: Tuesday-Saturday 8 am 5 pm, one hour lunch

Medical Lab Technologists - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

• Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting a new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained.
• Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections.
• Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.
• Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments on which trained. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks, and monitoring. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs.
• Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures. Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results.
• Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly.
• Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system.
• Responsible for LIM services to build or maintain connectivity between PHRL and all VAMC clinical laboratories

MT/CLS - REQUIREMENTS

• Must currently possess the appropriate certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR).
• B.S. degree in a Biological Sciences-related field and 2-5 years of laboratory experience (especially molecular assays).
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
• Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
• Ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
• Ability to communicate, consult, and interact with Laboratory Director, Laboratory Supervisor, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Knowledge and understanding of laboratory operations and their relationship to the organization, enough to solve testing, quality, or customer service problems.
