Pittsburgh VAMC
It is an acute care and inpatient behavioral health facility with 146 beds available for medical, neurological, and surgical care in the main facility and 78 secure, private psychiatric beds in the consolidation building. This campus also receives the most outpatient visits of all VAPHS facilities.

The University Drive campus of VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System is located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Events Center. It is an acute care and inpatient behavioral health facility with 146 beds available for medical, neurological, and surgical care in the main facility and 78 secure, private psychiatric beds in the consolidation building. Medical Dosimetrist - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • The board-certified medical dosimetrist shall perform, in conjunction with the medical physicist, treatment planning for the SRS/SRT, HDR brachytherapy, IMRT, and IGRT. The Dosimetrist shall be present during patient treatment for HDR brachytherapy.
  • Shall design treatment plans by means of computer and/or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the VA radiation oncologist prescription to a defined tumor volume.
  • Shall consider dose limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and document dose in accordance with VA radiation oncologist prescription.
  • The board certified medical dosimetrist shall assist with treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including computer tomography and MRI, when indicated, for radiation therapy treatment planning.
  • Shall assist in planning and oversee fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices.
  • Shall assist in the planning, oversight, and supervision of production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
  • Shall assist radiation therapy staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and any treatment variable associated with treatment planning and implementation.
  • Shall perform calculation methods for the delivery of prescribed dose, and subsequent documentation in patient files, and verification of the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the medical physicist.
  • Shall provide dosimetry and technical support to the medical physicist, and radiation protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibration, and quality assurance of the radiation therapy equipment. Will assist in the application of specific methods of do symmetry including ion chamber, TLD, or film measurements as directed by the medical physicist.

Qualifications

  • Education: Must have a bachelor's degree in medical dosimetry or a related field, such as biology or physical science from an accredited medical dosimetry program.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of continuous working experience within the last 3 years. Must also have the following min. number of years of experience, expertise, and knowledge on the following procedures, equipment, and software:
    • 2 years experience of documentation detailing experience in performing QA procedures
    • 1 year CMD experience in a healthcare system that is ACR/APEx certified.
    • 1 year of experience of Varian Linear Accelerators: True Beam with Brain Lab Accessories following standards of TG-142
    • 1 year of experience with Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) including Cone Beam CT (following standards of TG-142)
    • 1 year of experience Eclipse treatment planning system: and ARIA record and verify system, including the following treatment modalities: 2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT and IMRT/VMAT (following standards of TG-53)
    • 1 year of experience with IMRT QA: MapCheck and ArcCheck (or equivalent)
    • 1 year of experience Client Discovery CT Simulator (or equivalent) and following standards of TG-66
  • Board certified by the Medical Dosimetrist certification board.
