It's operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice, and is a low-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum security stellite camp.

Optometrist – Requirements
- The Optometrist will evaluate patients as referred by the medical staff.
- Provide legible written reports on all patients evaluated.
- Perform eye exams as requested, diagnose eye conditions, remove foreign objects from the eye, perform tonometry exams, recommend treatment, and follow-up care.
- Prescribe corrective lenses/frames as appropriate.
- Fit eyeglasses and adjustment of frames.
- Individualize the adjustment of exam equipment as needed.
- Must complete a minimum of 20 and up to 25 scheduled exams per eight-session day.
- Utilize the Bureau of Prisons' Electronic Medical Record to document the eye exam.
Optometrist – Qualifications
- Must have the ability to work with an inmate population from a variety of cultural, regional, and racial and ethnic backgrounds.
- Must have knowledge of routine office-related duties, including working knowledge of computers, word processing programs, and be able to type.
- The optometrist must possess good organizational skills, good interpersonal relationship skills, and be able to work effectively with the medical staff.
- Must hold a diploma from an accredited program and must possess one year of experience in Optometry.
- Shall hold a current professional license that permits them to practice the professional specialty of Optometry in Florida.
